Species of economic importance

Only two cicadas are regarded of economic importance as pest species in Australia. These are the Brown Buzzer Cicadetta crucifera and the Grass Fairie Parnkalla muelleri, known in agricultural circles as the "Brown Sugarcane Cicada" and "Yellow Sugarcane Cicada" respectively. Both species have been recorded as abundant in sugarcane fields at certain districts in certain seasons. There is also a single account of the Neon Ambertail Cicadetta multifascia causing damage to a grape crop.

The greatest damage is done when thousands of female cicadas oviposit within a single crop, causing much destruction to plant tissue. Some crops can literally be sliced to shreds when this occurs.
